How much does Stripe take from a payment?
What Stripe deducts from a domestic US payment of 100, 500, 1,000 and 5,000 US dollars, computed from the standard pricing Stripe publishes on its own pricing page, for a card entered online and for a bank debit.
The short answer
For a domestic card entered online, at standard pricing, Stripe publishes 2.9% + 0.30 US dollars per successful transaction. That is 3.20 US dollars on a payment of 100, 14.80 on 500, 29.30 on 1,000 and 145.30 on 5,000. The fixed 0.30 is charged on every payment, so the share Stripe takes is a little higher on small payments than on large ones.

Bank debit: ACH Direct Debit
Stripe publishes a separate rate when the client pays by ACH Direct Debit, a debit from a US bank account instead of a card: 0.8% with the fee capped at 5.00 US dollars. The cap is reached at a payment of 625 US dollars, so every larger payment costs the same 5.00.
| Provider and rate | Client pays | Fee | Effective % | You keep |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Stripe ACH Direct Debit, 0.8%, fee capped at $5.00 | $100.00 | $0.80 | 0.80% | $99.20 |

What to charge to keep a round amount
The fee is taken out of what the client pays, so to keep a round amount you have to charge a little more. At the card rate, to keep 100 US dollars charge 103.30, and to keep 1,000 charge 1,030.17. Each figure is the smallest amount, to the cent, that leaves at least the target after the fee. The calculator does this for any amount.

Other fees Stripe publishes for a US account
- An extra 0.5% when the card number is keyed in by hand instead of being entered by the customer online.
- An Instant Payout for US accounts at 1.5% of the payout, with a minimum of 0.50 US dollars.
- No fee for a standard, non-instant payout was read on the pricing page, so none is recorded here. That is a gap in what was read, not a statement that the payout is free.

What these figures leave out
- Cards issued outside the US and currency conversion. Stripe publishes surcharges for both; they are part of the Pro page.
- Taxes, chargebacks, disputes, refunds and custom pricing for large volumes.
- The cost of whatever you use to send the invoice or deliver the product. Stripe is priced here as a card processor only.
- Rounding: fees are rounded to the nearest cent here. A provider may round one cent differently.
